A Post from Crissy

Friday, June 25th, 2010

This past week, I was able to make some campaign stops on my own in Memphis and in Jackson, as Bill continued his work on the campaign trail in middle Tennessee.  On Tuesday, I started the morning at the Memphis Children’s Museum where I participated in a reading to the First Book Club, followed by a tour of the museum – what a fantastic facility.  I enjoyed learning about all of the new innovative tools that the museum uses, and met some terrific families along the way!  After the morning visit, I had lunch with a great group of homeschool moms.  School choice is an important part of Bill’s plan for improving education in Tennessee, so it was important to listen to this group talk about the issues they face and the role each of them take in furthering their child’s education.  Thank you Gina Johnson for hosting this terrific lunch at your home!  After lunch, I made a couple of non-profit stops in and around town.  I enjoyed learning about Bridges USA, and the fantastic things they are doing in Memphis.  I also stopped by and visited Junior Achievement, a group with a strong passion to inspire children through free enterprise education.  The work they are able to do, by partnering with local professionals in the community, was so terrific to see.  As I am familiar with many of the non-profits I visit from my work with those in Knoxville, it is always interesting to me to see the different ways these groups are able to help their local communities, as we all work to make an impact across the state.  I ended the day with volunteers back in our Memphis Campaign Office, making phone calls to garner support for Bill.  I cannot thank everyone enough for their willingness to help, I know that Bill really appreciates your work and support!

On Wednesday morning, I started the day on WREG’s Live at 9 morning talk show.  I enjoyed being able to talk about life on the campaign trail and the plans that Bill has for my hometown.  After the live taping, I headed to Jackson – where I met up with Cyndi Bryant, who  introduced me to a fantastic group of women.  I had such a fun time at the luncheon the group hosted for me, and I want to thank the hosts and Joan Tomlin for opening her home to all of us!  After the luncheon, it was on to Dickson, where I met back up with Bill to knock on doors.  It was a quick trip West, but I enjoyed all of the new things I was able to see and the new faces I was able to meet.  Thanks to everyone for your encouragement and words of support for Bill along the way!

Habitat Build

Monday, June 14th, 2010

It was an exciting day for our campaign staff and volunteers, as Jennifer Cummins became a new homeowner on Sunday.  I was so proud of our campaign staff and volunteers, as they worked tirelessly for several weekends on a Nashville area Habitat for Humanity build to serve their local community in the midst of a busy campaign.  Thanks to all of you who helped along the way!

A Message From Bill
With just 42 days until the start of early voting, we’re criss-crossing the state in an effort to meet as many of you as possible all while sharing my plan to make Tennessee the #1 state in the southeast for high quality jobs. Crissy and I are still amazed by the tremendous hospitality we’ve received from so many of you and we’re so humbled to have your support. I’ll be in your area soon and will look forward to seeing you then. Be on the lookout for invitations from our campaign staff.

Memphis Plan
Earlier this week, Mayor Haslam released his Memphis plan, a new approach to building on Memphis and Shelby County’s strengths as well as addressing the area’s unique challenges.

As Mayor Haslam says, “If Tennessee is a business, Memphis is your biggest branch, so if Tennessee is going to succeed, Memphis must succeed because the city is critically important to our state historically, culturally and economically.”

Appreciative of Kempie’s Endorsement
Watch the second spot in a series featuring Tennesseans talking about why Bill should be Governor. In this spot, Kempie Jenkins, a school teacher, shares her opinion of the man behind the candidate. Kempie sums it up quite well by saying, “He is very much a genuine person that cares about people first…” Watch Kempie’s endorsement by clicking the image on the left and then share your endorsement of Mayor Haslam at BillHaslam.com.
Focus on Veterans in Upper East Tennessee
Over the Memorial Day weekend Mayor Haslam toured the VA Medical Center in Mountain Home and spoke with several veterans during a campaign stop in Jonesborough.

Gary Gray from the Johnson City Press was there and asked Vietnam veteran, Terry Nelson to evaluate the candidate: “I’ve met the other ones, and he’s the only one that makes any sense. At least he listens. That’s the thing that impressed me.”
